Why Maintenance Matters
Here in the Southwest, campervans face all kinds of weather; sun, rain, salt air, and strong winds. Over time, these can wear down seals, damage canvas, and affect the lifting mechanism.
Regular maintenance will:
- Prevent leaks and water ingress
- Extend the life of your roof and canvas
- Keep your campervan looking fresh
- Reduce the risk of costly repairs

1. Clean the Roof and Canvas Regularly
Canvas Care
- Use a soft brush or damp cloth to remove dirt and dust
- For heavier soiling, use a mild canvas cleaner, never pressure wash
- Let the canvas dry completely before closing the roof
Roof Shell
- Wash with warm soapy water and a soft sponge
- Rinse and dry with a microfibre cloth
- Apply UV-protectant wax every few months
All products are available at the Complete Campers Southwest showroom in Paignton.
2. Inspect and Lubricate the Mechanism
- Check hinges, gas struts, and lifting arms for corrosion or wear
- Use silicone spray (avoid oil-based lubricants)
- Tighten bolts and fastenings where needed
3. Reseal and Waterproof the Canvas
- Inspect seams, zips, and seals regularly
- Apply waterproofing spray such as Fabsil Gold or Nikwax once or twice a year
- Ensure the canvas is fully dry before treating
4. Use the Roof Correctly
When Opening:
- Clear off leaves, branches, or snow
- Raise slowly and evenly to avoid strain
When Closing:
- Tuck in the canvas edges carefully
- Do not force the roof closed; check for obstructions
- Secure all latches before driving
5. Care During Storage
- Open occasionally to ventilate and prevent condensation
- Always dry the canvas before storage
- Inspect regularly for damp, damage, or insects
